Many carriers require a special monthly fee in order to use tethering. This type of tethering turns your BlackBerry into a Wi-Fi hot spot accessible to your iPad and other mobile devices. For an iPad, you need to use the Mobile Hotspot feature. The BlackBerry offers a few types of tethering, including the ability to connect a laptop to the Internet via USB. Tethering extends your phone's existing data connection to other devices. RIM added the Mobile Hotspot feature in BlackBerry OS 7.1, so phones running older operating systems cannot use this feature. This allows you to get online from a Wi-Fi-only iPad while out of the office, or avoid running up data charges on your cellular-capable iPad's data plan. If you have a BlackBerry data plan that allows tethering, you can use the cellular Internet connection to provide a Wi-Fi connection for your iPad.
